Archives for February 2017
We’ve survived another mild in amazingly good shape, no bare spots or washouts. Terry has been grooming with the Piston Bully since 6:30 AM and just finished grooming all trails. The skating surface is in excellent shape, as good as it has been any time this year. The diagonal track has been set everywhere and is also in excellent condition. It is a little shallower than normal in a few places where Terry didn’t want to cut down too deep. A warning to people skiing the Gold Trail, on the turn at the bottom of the hill after the two-way section the snow off the groomed surface has settled and there is a drop-off at the edge of the groomed surface. Get out and enjoy some skiing early this week, looks like another mild is coming on Thursday. The hut is open and lights will be on tonight.
SnoBreak 2017 Free Ski Day and Lessons

NL Cup #3 – Summitfest Races
Several of club’s race team went to Clarenville for the NL Cup #3 – Summit fest races this weekend.
4 people attended the Saturday events which included an 8 or 16k freestyle race in the morning and a 3.2k classic race in the afternoon.
Our skiers did well and everyone had a laugh at the events. Very fun racing. Our skiers took home 2 silver medals and two gold medals
King’s Court Freestyle Sprint Races
On Sunday 3 members attended the King’s court freestyle sprint races. If you’ve ever seen one of these events then you know how fun they are!
Again we did well with one of our skiers setting the 3rd fastest time and then staying in the top bracket for all 3 heats. 2 of our other skiers won silver and bronze in their category and were not knocked out of the 2nd bracket!
(6 people race at a time. The top 2 in each race move up to a higher bracket; the middle 2 stay ; and the bottom 2 drop to a lower bracket.)
All in all everyone did great!
NL Provincial Marathon
The NL provincial marathon is happening this coming weekend in Stephenville and we have several skiers attending the race. There are categories for all ages and different distances to match.
If you would like more info on the marathon, please email Paul via firstname.lastname@example.org
Challenge group will be going ahead on Monday from 730 to 9pm. All abilities and techniques welcome to attend these race prep work outs.
We are on for the Tuesday sprints this week! Sprints start at 7pm. Please show a few minutes early to register. Last week we had Sr and Jr males and females as well both classic and skate competitors. You should try one of these!
Jeremy has been on the Bearcat for almost 3 hours and made two passes on the skating area on all the trails. Should be a beautiful surface today. The diagonal track set yesterday by the Pisten Bulley is still good.
The Pisten Bulley is down temporarily to get a flap on the drag back in place. This is the cause of the narrow depression in the skating surface that skaters noted over the weekend. The flaps at the rear of the drag leave the perfectly even surface of tiny lines in the snow. One of these popped out of place making a piece of the flap sink down in the snow. Our mechanic is working on this today.
No sprints, no challenge group this week
Attached is a link to the pictures Hubert took on Sunday. Thanks, Hubert, for the great action shots of the snowshoers.
Terry finished grooming with the Pisten Bulley a little after midnight so the trails have had a chance to set up overnight. They should be in excellent shape.
The Special Olympians and a huge group of volunteers had a busy afternoon on Saturday cramming in an incredible number of races. What an event. Sunday morning will be just as jam packed but before noon they’ll have finished and everything will be in place for the Junior program.
Junior program today
2 pm Chocolate Races, fun games. A special Valentine’s event. The Challenge group is invited to come out, too. Any extra help for the chocolate ski this afternoon would be appreciated. Any questions, contact Julia at email@example.com
