This years Loppet has been scheduled for March 20th!!!
Rally your ski mates and make this a social event. Ski your distance. Take a break for refreshments when you wish. Stop by the fire which we’ll have near the hut. No times recorded. No awards or positions. Simply lots of skiing and fun.
The 3nd Annual Lakeside Loppet
Skiers of all abilities and styles are invited to come out for a fun day of skiing here at the Airport Nordic Ski Trails. We have a nice 10k loop laid out that offers some great scenery and even better skiing. Skiers will have the option of doing a 10k, 20k, 30k, and even a marathon 40k distance ski in a non competitive format. Sure all skiers will start at the same time and some skiers may have their watches on, but this is not a timed event and there will be no placings or “race” categories. Just a fun day out on the trails skiing at whatever pace you like. The objective for the event will be, just like last year, to see how many kilometers total we can accumulate as a ski club. Friends, families, coworkers, schools, ski buddies, etc, are all encouraged to create “teams” and put forth their own distance challenges. Again, time is not considered.
Last year we had 47 skiers participate and the total distance skied was 910km ! That was an excellent turnout for year one but this year let’s see if we can build on last year’s momentum and break the 1000km mark!
The event is free for club members, but we are asking all participants to make a donation of $3 per lap when they register. (10k =$3, 20k = $6, 30k = $9 and 40k = $12). Non-members will pay day fees plus a contribution of $1 per lap. The lap contributions plus day fees will all go towards the Ski Development Fund.
There will be a table outside the hut for skiers to place their snacks and drinks on, should they chose to do so, and the hut will also be open should people prefer to keep their supplies inside and take a little break.
Route:* There will be no marshals on the trails, but maps will be posted in advance and signage will be present. The route will be Upper Blue, Purple, Green, Red Extension, and the Red. (10k loop)
*If the 10k course is too much for you, come out and do whatever you can. Every kilometer counts. The only caution is about possible congestion if you are going in reverse direction along the section of the Red between the Purple and Blue.
Start 12 pm
Finish 4pm
Registration: In person, day of event 45mins to 15mins before the start. Please make your lap contribution when you register. Contribute more later if you ski extra distance
Noon start for Lakeside Loppett.
Lakeside Loppett 12 noon Saturday March 20
This later start time will give a little more time for the temps to improve from what promises to be a cold overnight on Friday. Anyone wishing to start earlier can do so and check in at the hut between 11:30 and 12 noon to register with everyone else.
Maximum group distance
We want to see as many skiers as possible on the trails and as high an overall distance as possible for all the skiers involved. Ski for yourself. Ski for the group.
Pick your own distance.
The assigned 10 km Loppett lap (Blue, Purple, Green, Red Ext and Red) will be marked with arrows, but anyone wishing to choose a shorter lap is welcome to do so. The more skiers the merrier and the greater the overall collective distance. Add up your total distance and pay for whatever you ski. Pay in advance for what you plan to ski and pay afterwards for any extra distance.
Possible shorter routes.
The 1 km Blue is a good children’s route. Add the Pink for a little more challenge. Or instead add the Purple to make the most of the flatland. Then include the Green for a tiny hill.
The combinations are numerous. One caution. Anyone skiing in reversre on the Red trail between the Blue and Purple must be extra careful of oncoming skiers, some of whom will be cruising at high speeds.
